European flat racing bows out with a splash this Saturday as Munich stages the season’s final Group 1, the Grosser Preis von Bayern, alongside the European World Pool swansong. Rain soaked ground and plummeting temperatures promise a gruelling stamina test over the mile and a half trip, ensuring only the gutsiest stayers will thrive.
Owen Burrows brings the headline act from Britain in Gethin 激風, a powerhouse who previously pushed dual Group 1 victor Ombudsman 監察官 to the wire at Sandown. Burrows makes no secret of his high regard for the colt, and with proven soft ground credentials under James Doyle, he sets the benchmark for the nine rivals lining up against him.
The British and French raids gain extra teeth through a pair of receiving weight fillies: Sir Mark Prescott’s ultra tough Consent 放行, runner up over nearly two miles in the Prix Royal Oak just weeks ago, and Francis Henri Graffard’s lightly raced Tajlina 寶冠綾羅. Defending home soil are Santagada 仙嬌蹄, Germany’s premier older filly, and Henk Grewe’s surging unbeaten colt Akido 愛激鬥, who relishes testing underfoot conditions and hunts a five timer following Group 3 success at Baden Baden.
Earlier on the five race simulcast, the World Pool Juvenile (S3-2, 8:50 pm HKT) showcases the country’s next generation, led by Peter Schiergen’s form horse Karlos 麒麟笑, before the testing Grosser Preis von Bayern (S3-5) crowns the European season at 10:30 pm HKT.
